100000 kilometers in 10 years, how is the condition of a second-hand Volkswagen car?

September 29, 2025

In the morning, a Volkswagen Jetta arrived at the store. It was a 2015 1.6-liter manual version, produced in May 2015 and has been in use for 10 years. The owner said that this is a second-hand car he just bought and hasn't driven much yet, but there is always a strange noise and some deviation when driving on bumpy roads. Check if it needs to be positioned and see what the condition of the car is like.

For the problem described by the car owner, the mechanic first conducted a road test. The problem does exist, and the chassis is still relatively loose, which will definitely affect the chassis data. The deviation is likely caused by problems with certain components of the chassis. As for the engine and gearbox, there is no problem at all.

So the master drove the car onto the lift and conducted a preliminary inspection first.

According to the dashboard, the total mileage is 106000 kilometers, but the time display is incorrect. The morning time is displayed as evening.

Looking at the front suspension, there is no protective plate under the engine, and the lower support arm is made of single-layer stamped steel plate. There is a problem with the lower support arm rubber sleeve.

The rubber sleeve of the steering outer rod ball joint is damaged, as shown in the picture below. Shaking the ball joint by hand may cause looseness.

The following picture shows the rubber sleeve of the lower support arm, and the rubber part has been damaged.

The main issue with the chassis is concentrated in the front suspension, while the rear is a torsion beam non independent suspension. After inspection, there were no problems with the suspension. There is just a nail stuck in the left rear wheel, which does not leak when pulled out.

After inspection, the driver explained to the car owner the cause of the abnormal chassis noise and deviation. It is necessary to replace the two front steering outer rod ball joints and two front lower support arms, and then perform four-wheel alignment.

The car owner asked, can this repair solve all the problems? After receiving a positive response from the master, the car owner agreed to the repair in this way. The following picture shows the disassembly of the steering outer rod ball joint.

Quickly, the two new lower support arms and the steering pull ball head were installed, as shown in the figure below. Next, the car needs to be driven onto the four-wheel alignment instrument for positioning.

As shown in the figure below, the car has been driven to the four-wheel alignment instrument and the equipment has been installed on all four wheels.

After four-wheel alignment, the driver conducted a road test and made minor adjustments. The chassis noise has disappeared and the vehicle will not deviate. The problem has been solved and the owner is quite satisfied.
