Approaching the end of work, a Honda Accord entered the store. The owner got off the car and said that the right front wheel seemed to be nailed and would slowly leak air. He had just inflated the tire in the garage and wanted to repair the leak.
The master pulled the jack and supported the right front wheel. As shown in the picture below, the tire screws have been loosened and the tire has been lifted off the ground.
When the master was loosening the tire screws, he found a clear crushing mark on the tire sidewall and asked the owner: Did you drive a certain distance with the tire flat? We can see from the arrow that the side of the tire has already been dented, which is caused by driving when the tire is completely deflated.
The car owner said that the car was parked on the roadside yesterday and when they were about to drive, they found that the right front wheel was flat and had no air left. They thought it was not far from the garage and there was no inflation pump at the time, so they drove the car to the garage and parked it, which was only a hundred meters away. They just found an inflation pump to inflate the tire and came over quickly to make up for it.
The master said that after the tire is completely flat, do not continue driving (except in emergency situations). The wheel rim will directly crush the side of the tire, which is the weakest part of the tire itself. This makes it very easy to be damaged after crushing. Now let's remove the tire and see what the inside of the tire looks like, and see if it can be repaired.
When removing the tire, we found that there were some perforated plastic shells inside the wheel rim that were tightly attached to the wheel rim, as shown in the picture below. After asking the technician, we learned that this is a special configuration of Honda to reduce tire noise, and it is very easy to damage the tire when removing it.
After removing the tire from the wheel rim, we can see the condition inside the tire, as shown in the figure below. The inside has started to peel, mainly concentrated on the side and shoulder of the tire.
The master said that this is the typical behavior of driving with completely deflated tires. If you continue to drive, there will be a lot of black rubber residue inside the tires; If you continue driving, the tire side will be crushed and separated from the tread, and the wheel rim will directly contact the ground. The consequence is not only to replace the tire, but also to replace the wheel rim, and in severe cases, it may damage the suspension.
Seeing the situation inside the tire, the mechanic suggested that the owner replace it with a new tire because the interior of this tire has already been damaged. Even if the nail position is repaired, there may still be air leakage, which is very unsafe. In addition, the tread pattern of this tire is relatively shallow and has been in use for a long time, so it is not a loss to replace it.
After considering it, the car owner agreed to replace the tire with a new one, but also expressed that they did not expect the tire to run for more than 100 meters and the interior to become like this. They will pay more attention in the future.
